To rapidly accelerate the adoption of electric cooking in Rwanda by deploying smart electric cookers, transitioning households and institutions from biomass to clean electric cooking through a scalable, high-integrity model that also establishes a replicable blueprint for e-cooking scale-up across Sub-Saharan Africa.  With our partners we want to deploy 200,000 smart EPCs to Rwandan households and small businesses, displacing wood fuel cooking at scale.

African-made electric pressure cookers replace traditional cooking and cut around one tonne of CO2e per household each year. Because the cookers run on metered electricity, the savings are measured directly from usage data, which makes the credits far more verifiable than fuel-based clean cooking credits. The project targets 100,000 households over the first five years, aligns with the Gold Standard and the ICVCM Core Carbon Principles, and is built for Rwanda's Article 6  programme. We have submitted the documentation to the Government of Rwanda, which has been driving the project forward, and we expect the Letter of Authorisation to follow. 

The NDC's principal clean-cooking measure is to disseminate modern efficient cookstoves to 80 percent of the rural population and 50 percent of the urban population by 2030. Electric pressure cookers and induction stoves sit at the cleanest end of this modern-cooking spectrum, fully displacing on-site biomass combustion. The project therefore, counts toward the cookstove dissemination target and exceeds its ambition by removing biomass demand entirely for participating households.
